Woodhorn Railway

1993

The beginning

Vane Tempest Colliery donates Hunslet Engine and 3 carriages to Wansbeck District Council

1994

Installed line

Railway line is completed around the QEII Country Park.

2008

Purchased Schoma Engine

Originally white in colour, it had been used in the construction of the Channel Tunnel but is now in the livery of WNGR.

2013

Acquired 3rd engine

Prior to its acquisition, this engine was formerly used in the construction of the Jubilee line extension.  Now privately owned it is kindly loaned back to WNGR for as long as we need  it  and has been adapted for a vital Permanent-Way role.

2018

Railway closed permanently

2023

Formation of WNGR Wellbeing Group

Commenced work on restoring rolling stock

In April 2023, WNGR forms.

2024

Moving forward

In May, the group formed as a Community Interest Company (CIC) with the aim of becoming a registered charity in time, to allow it to progress and apply for grants.

In August, the new sleepers arrive and work begins on relaying the track.
